We tend to believe that our
breed has a relatively long history. In fact, modern Alaskan Malamutes
derive from a breed selection that an Inuit tribe called Mahlemut
carried on for thousands of years. Dogs which are famous in Alaska for
their size, their beauty and docility, chiefly if we compare them with
the breeds owned by other northern tribes.
Unfortunately, at the end of the 19th century, these Arctic regions
were upset by the gold rush. The balance that had lasted for ages
among Arctic tribes was destroyed; so was the ages-old selection of
these northern breeds. The dogs were crossbred, often with European
breeds. After few decades these dogs had almost disappeared.
At the beginning of the following century a few enlightened people
were fascinated by the beauty of these northern breeds and an arduous
job of recovery of these dogs was undertaken. It’s important to know
the history of our breed if we want to understand the modern Malamute,
and therefore we wish you a good reading. |
